About the Program
If you want to become an elementary teacher (grades K-6) and have a bachelor's degree in a field outside of education, then this program is for you. Completion of the entire program (coursework and internships) leads to initial certification in Elementary Education with ESOL certification and a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Elementary Education.
Frequently asked questions about the Dual Track Program
- Can I attend full-time or part-time?
Yes, for either option. However, your course of study should be carefully planned each semester because some courses are only offered at night and some courses may have a limited number of sections.
- Can I complete the program in St. Petersburg?
The entire Dual Track program is offered at USF St. Petersburg. In addition, courses in the program are offered at Pasco Hernando Community College (PHCC) in New Port Richey.
- Can I complete the program by taking classes only at night?
Two semesters of field experience are required in the Dual Track program. EDG 6931 (Practicum) students are assigned to elementary classrooms two days per week for twelve weeks. ESOL III Practicum (FLE 5940) students work with ESOL children in the public schools for 60 hours. EDG 6947 (Final Internship) is a full-time internship for an entire semester. In addition to the internships, some courses may be available only during the day.
- How long does it take to complete the program?
Students attending full-time can complete the program, including internships, in five to six semesters. Those attending part-time will lengthen the time required to complete the program. However, coursework may not be older than five years at the time of graduation.
- May I take courses before I am admitted?
You may take specified courses at USF St. Petersburg as a non-degree seeking student for one semester while finalizing your application.
- May I transfer courses from another university?
With departmental approval, a maximum of 8 semester hours or three graduate courses may be transferred from a regionally accredited university. However, no undergraduate courses may be substituted for a graduate course. You may be asked to provide a transcript, catalog course description, and syllabus.
- What are the Comprehensive Exams?
The Comprehensive Exams assesses knowledge from various course topics. The exams are offered in different formats. You must apply to take the exams the semester prior to the semester in which the Comprehensive Exams will be taken, and be enrolled for two graduate hours in the semester the exams are taken.
- ESOL
Several Courses in the Dual Track Program satisfy requirements for the state endorsement in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). The endorsement will be noted on your teaching certificate.
- Dual Track Master's students are responsible for all information in the USFSP Graduate catalog, COE materials, and the graduate email listserv.
Admission Requirements
- Successful completion of all portions of the CLAST, or the Praxis I, or the General Knowledge Test, or a GRE score of 1000. The General Knowledge Test is recommended if none have been taken.
AND
- Applicants must have at least a 2.5 grade point average for their four-year undergraduate degree, and for the last two years of their undergraduate degree.
AND
- A grade point average of 3.0 or greater for the last two years of their undergraduate degree
OR
- If grade point avarage is 2.5 to 3.0, a score of 1000 or greater on the combined verbal and quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

Letters of recommendation are not required for applicants who meet requirements.

- Have Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores reported to USF Graduate Admissions.
- Obtain an online Graduate Catalog. http://grad.usf.edu. Give special attention to Section 10 Graduate Academic Policies.
- Validate your admission by taking at least one course in the semester in which you are admitted. If you are unable to do so, contact the Graduate Coordinator (727-873-4269) otherwise, you will be dropped from the program.
- All students are required to subscribe to the USF St. Petersburg Graduate Programs listserve and to monitor email messages. To subscribe send a blank email to join-gradprog@lists.acomp.usf.edu : A confirming message will be sent back to you
- File a Planned Program of Studies and a Statement of Responsibility with your advisor during the first semester admitted.
- Maintain a 3.0 grade point average to remain in good academic standing.
- Submit an application for the Practicum (EDG 6931) by the deadline, the semester before interning.
- Apply for Final Internship two semesters prior to the semester you plan to intern. Register for Final Internship (EDG 6947) in the semester of internship.
- Apply to take the Comprehensive Exams in the semester prior to the semester you will take the exams, before the "last day to drop/withdraw from courses without penalty." Plan to be enrolled in at least two graduate hours the semester you take the exams.
- Pass the Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FCTE), (Elementary Education K-6 subject area exam, General Knowledge Test and Professional Education) prior to Final Internship. Submit an original score sheet to the Graduate Coordinator (COQ 204) as soon as all exams are passed.
- Pass the Comprehensive Exams.
- Submit the Application for Degree at the beginning of the semester in which you intend to graduate.
